Universal MH/DD/SAS is dedicated to helping individuals and families affected by mental illness, developmental disabilities and substance abuse in achieving their full potential to live, work and grow in the community.

Universal MH/DD/SAS is a comprehensive human services organization that strives to provide quality integrated assistance to our persons served within the areas of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse. Our organization is endorsed by each Managed Care Organization (MCO) in the state.

Universal MH/DD/SAS is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International. We pride ourselves with our person served-friendly and professional service delivery and we assure our persons served and their families the highest standards possible within our many locations throughout the state of North Carolina.

• We will inform persons served that they have the right to services without regard to race, age, sex, creed, color, national origin, sexual orientation, occupation or disability.
• We will encourage and support persons served and their families.
• We will act in a manner consistent with our professional ethics.
• All employees will respect persons served by protecting their right to confidentiality.
• We will honor individual and cultural diversities be being empathic and treating each person served in a fair and consistent manner.
• We will treat all persons entering in our facilities with dignity and respect and will not, under any circumstances, engage in or tolerate behaviors, which involve a form of harassment, intimidation, abuse or exploitation.
• We will work in a manner that provides for informed consent and active participation by the persons served in decisions regarding their services.
• We will strive to build and maintain relationships with persons served and colleagues that will develop trust and enhance our goal of providing the most appropriate and least restrictive services.
• We will deliver services to empower persons toward becoming independent and to maximize their quality of life.
• We will work in our community to enhance cooperation and increase resources through team work and collaboration.

Richard and Robert Greer were forerunners in establishing an agency which specialized in providing needed supports for persons with developmental disabilities who, with that little extra support, could greatly improve the quality of their lives.

They were the founders of the first organization in North Carolina to deliver such services in the area of developmental disabilities. That agency initiated services on May 13, 1986.

During their tenures as owners of that first agency they provided quality supports to persons with developmental disabilities from Asheville to Wilmington and all points in between.

Approximately 2,200 well-trained employees were out in the community providing supports that improved the quality of many people's lives. On July 31, 1997, the initial agency was sold to ResCare Corporation of Louisville, Kentucky.

In March of 2003, Richard Greer, Robert Greer and Alicia Austin began to undertake the prospect of once again providing human services to the citizens of North Carolina. This undertaking was in part, 

• A response to the North Carolina Mental Health Reform Act of 2000
• At the request of numerous professionals in the human services field to replicate the successful formula of delivering dependable, high-quality services provided by well-trained employees
• As a way of ensuring that fellow citizens of North Carolina, who are living with disabilities on a daily basis, receive the supports and respect they deserve

We have developed a team of owners, administration and clinical staff which is focused on delivering services of the highest quality on a consistent basis. Universal MH/DD/SAS is dedicated to providing quality staff to deliver services that are meaningful and helpful to our persons served. Caring People, Caring for People is not just our motto, it is our standard.
